Latest RFU Headcase Resources

Following the publication of the Government’s UK Concussion Guidelines for Grassroots Sport, the RFU’s HEADCASE resources have been given a new look and updated to align with these guidelines. The RFU’s HEADCASE programme aims to increase understanding and provide information on concussion and other related topics, including how to prevent and manage suspected concussions. It is recognised as one of the UK’s leading concussion awareness and education resources.

All referees are expected to have completed the revised RFU Headcase e-learning module for match officials. Logon on to RFU GMS to access the module and ensure that your successful completion of it is recorded on your training record.

It is worth stressing again the following points:

  • Concussion must be taken extremely seriously to safeguard the safety and long-term health of players.
  • If during a match a player shows at least one symptom of concussion, that player must be removed permanently from the playing area (Law 3.24).
  • There is no provision for the elite-level Head Injury Assessment (HIA) protocol to be used in the community game.
  • For the avoidance of doubt, the match official must not allow a player who has suffered a concussion or suspected concussion to return to the field of play, even if it is claimed that the player was assessed by a medical practitioner.
