Half Game Rule – Age grade Rugby

  • May 10, 2019

To: RFRU & Referee Society Secretaries

I am sure that many of you will be aware of the recent announcement of the Half-Game Rule to become regulation from September 2019. It means that every age-grade player in clubs, schools and colleges is guaranteed to get half the available game time. Details can be found at, https://www.englandrugby.com/news/half-game-rule-introduced-regulation/

Attached are some FAQs, which provide guidance and we would ask that you share with your members. For those of us who referee these matches it is important to understand how we can support and encourage adoption of the Half-Game. The FAQ guidance for referees;

I am a referee, what can I do to support the half-game rule?

Referees, like all others involved in Age Grade rugby, have a key role in supporting a great player experience. Referees should agree with coaches from both teams prior to the game, how they wish to implement the half-game rule – i.e. rolling subs, or during set breaks. Referees can help by reminding coaches of this as the game progresses. They can also be in a good position to identify where players are not getting half a game. We are not asking referees to enforce this locally by stopping the game or awarding sanctions, but they command a respect that can play an important part in helping players to benefit from the half game rule.

Before the start of the 2019/20 season, we will update you with the latest information. In the meantime, visit www.englandrugby.com/halfgameor if you have any questions please contact AgeGradeRugby@rfu.com
