ANNOUNCEMENT: Injured Players / Appointments Period 6 - please read
Injured Players* Referees are reminded that treatment of injuries and decisions on whether an injured player should be moved from the pitch or not MUST be left to the decision of the teams medical support.
* Under NO circumstances should the referee treat or attempt to treat the player. It is the home club’s responsibility to provide medical support.
* If there is no medically trained individual at the club and the referee believes that a player is injured, e.g., concussed, or more seriously in danger of death or serious injury, s/he SHOULD take such action as to safeguard the immediate welfare of the player. This MUST involve the player leaving the field of play until s/he has been medically examined and it is safe for him/her to return and the referee obtains CONFIRMATION FROM a medically trained person that it is safe for the player to return. Once this action is taken the normal procedures should apply and the referee should not be involved in treatment.
* Referees are reminded that under Law 3.9 they have the power to stop an injured player from continuing and/or to leave the field to be medically examined.
AppointmmentsAt last, the appointments for Period 6 are “finalised”… but do see the Health Warning on Page 6 of the Society’s Handbook!
It has been a challenging task this period (as in the last 2 for that matter!) to provide an equitable set of appointments - weeks of feast and famine - either of refs or games - and just as buttered bread falls on the buttered side, you can guess these do no coincide…
The process has not been aided in the past 3 periods by refs (thankfully a relatively small number!) changing their availability on the web after the cut-off date and not notifying me. Many thanks to the very many who are thoughtful and diligent in this and in always keeping their Web availability up-to-date.
At the time the appointment process for the period started (and it’s dynamic… but guess to what affect?!?) Matches v availability were:
24/3: 44 v 44 (now we are short of refs - even though we have had unexpected returnees from injury) 31/3: 54 v 61 (but as there are no a.m. matches and 8 refs were available a.m. only, we started -1) 7/4: 13 v 52 (+27 p.m. standbys) 14/4: 45 v 64 (+15 p.m. standbys) 21/4: 50 v 67 (+13 p.m. standbys) 28/4: 15 v 70 (+55 standbys)
As for the entire Season, regardless there is a mismatch in the profile of Levels of matches to Grades of Refs (to say nothing of huge impact geography has). You may well be down for matches below your grade - even Level 11 and 12s - we are trying to share these fairly - they have to be covered and, in any case, are often the only games we have!!
The assumption is, you would rather be refereeing than on standby.
THE GOOD NEWS - OVER THE SEASON
* As well as managing the numbers game, above, and implementing the OPC policy, ALL Refs should have matches at their substantive grade or better.
* At every Grade/Level, matches ARE being shared fairly - and this is monitored from one appointment period to another to give an overall balance.
* Standbys are shared out FAIRLY (2 together avoided if at all possible); everybody gets one - even if they are only available for 2 dates in the period.
* N.B. Those with additional standbys are, as far as is possible, appointed as and when matches come in or refs cry-off.
In an ideal world, account would be taken of cancelled matches - at this point, it is not humanly possible to do so, sorry. (However, feel able to email to flag a particularly bad run). This might be something we could begin to manage in the long-term? (Any volunteers to help? - seriously)
If you feel you are having less than a “fair crack of the whip”, do contact your Grade Mentor or me.
To the vast majority, thanks for following procedures, excellent communication and all your support in making the life of the Appointments / Reappointments Team easier.
